C.M. Thibodaux Co., Ltd.

A Louisiana Corporation Organized in 1912

The Thibodaux family of the Bayou Boeuf area of Assumption Parish in Louisiana have a well documented, thirteen generation ancestry, dating back to the year 1600 and originating in France. The Thibodaux ancestors found their way to Louisiana after first landing in l’Acadie, now known as Nova Scotia. As part of “Le Grand Derangement”, they first landed and settled on Saint Dominque Island in the Caribbean, then in New Orleans and then in Saint James Parish.

Charles Melance (C.M.) Thibodaux was born in 1844 in Coteau Folse in Lafourche Parish and was married in 1865. Charles and his brother Felix sold most of their property and moved to Bayou Boeuf in 1881. They began acquiring property along the east bank of Bayou Boeuf. In time, Charles and Felix divided their property. Charles and his wife had thirteen children, two of whom had died prior to the company being formed in 1912. Charles died in 1911 and his surviving eleven children formed the company the following year. This was done to avoid dividing Charles’ property into eleven parts or selling the land. The children named the company in honor of their father, Charles Melance.

There are now 66 descendants and heirs of C.M. Thibodaux who are the current shareholders of C.M. Thibodaux Co., Ltd. Although the property was originally used for various farming related endeavors, the company is now a lessor to builders and suppliers of the oil and gas industry. The property is also home to oil and natural gas wells.
